Large Carnivore Education Centre - Bulgaria
Our main project over the past five years has been with Balkani Wildlife Society in Bulgaria.
In 2005, E4C secured funding from DEFRA's Darwin Initiative to help equip the centre with staff and education materials and to provide training. Darwin Initiative supports projects in non-EU countries (the project started before Bulgaria joined the EU) that are rich in biodiversity. There is a particular emphasis on outcomes that meet the aims of the Convention on Biological Diversity and focus on capacity building, transfer of knowledge, biological research and education and awareness-raising.
Chisty Les Biological Research Station - Russia
In 2006, two E4C directors and one of our project partners visited Chisty Les (which means Clean Forest) in the Tver region of Russia.
This project is predominantly run by three generations of two families: the Bologovs and the Pashetnovs. Viktor Bologov and Valentin Pashetnov started the project in the 1960s studying wolves and bears, and working to protect and conserve them.
The project has developed over the decades, and in 2006 we saw first hand the final stages of the building of a new Large Carnivore Education Centre, which spans three storeys and is built in the traditional Russian style.
